About the founder
Kamel Arbi, PhD
Dr. Arbi is a distinguished Chemist, Materials Scientist, and Concrete Technologist with a robust commitment to advancing sustainability and innovation in the construction industry and the energy sector. He holds a PhD in Chemistry/Materials Science, backed by over 12 years of research experience at the Spanish National Research Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas, CSIC), followed by 2 years at Delft University of Technology (Faculty of Civil Engineering & Geosciences), and more than 10 years in the industry. His career is marked by significant contributions to the fields of concrete technology, renewable energy, and the development of innovative building materials.
Biography
Dr. Arbi’s expertise encompasses a wide range of subjects, including concrete durability, sustainable materials, the recycling and valorization of wastes including construction and demolition wastes (CDW). He is particularly renowned for his work in developing low-carbon cements and geopolymer concrete, which have the potential to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of construction practices. His research interests also extend to energy production and storage, focusing on rechargeable lithium/sodium batteries and fuel cells.
In addition to his academic achievements, Dr. Arbi has built a vast network within the industry, collaborating with numerous Dutch Ready Mixed Concrete (RMC), prefab companies, contractors, raw material suppliers and cerification bodies. His collaborative efforts include pilot projects funded by various public and private institutions across Spain, Colombia, and the Netherlands, enhancing the application of sustainable practices within the industry.
Dr. Arbi is an active Senior Member of prestigious professional organizations, including RILEM (International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems and Structures) and the European Federation of Corrosion. He contributes to several technical committees and has served as a reviewer for numerous scientific journals, including Cement & Concrete Research and Construction & Building Materials. His insights and expertise are sought after in national and international conferences related to materials for energy production, storage, and construction.
Beyond his research and industry collaborations, Dr. Arbi has been involved in mentoring the next generation of scientists as a co-supervisor for Master’s and PhD students. His dedication to education and knowledge sharing has enriched the academic landscape in the field of materials science.
Dr. Arbi’s numerous accolades include being a finalist at the TU Delft Research Exhibition (Delft, the Netherlands 2016), receiving the prize for the most sustainable canoe in the Beton Kano Race (Arnhem, the Netherlands 2016), and earning the 2nd best oral presentation award at the ECI Geopolymer Conference (Herrnstein, Austria 2015). He has also been awarded notable scholarships, including the FPI Scholarship from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology (2002-2006) and the scholarship from the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (1998-2002). Furthermore, Dr. Arbi was the designer and developer of the first reinforced concrete without cement (geopolymer concrete) used in infrastructure in the Netherlands (Heiloo Underpass project, 2019-2020), as well as cement-free concrete for various applications, such as marine and coastal projects like the concrete armour blocks in the Afsluitdijk (Afsluitdijk, the Netherlands 2020), concrete quay walls in the province of South Holland (Leiden, the Netherlands 2024), and waste collection solutions like the underground concrete containers/waste collection pits in the province of North Holland (Amsterdam, the Netherlands 2024).
Fluent in five languages—English, French, Spanish, Dutch, and Arabic—Dr. Arbi possesses not only a rich academic and professional background but also the linguistic skills to engage with a diverse array of stakeholders. His technical proficiency in various software applications further enhances his capability to contribute to innovative projects in materials science and engineering.
With a profound passion for sustainable development and a dedication to innovative building solutions, Dr. Arbi continues to be a leading figure in the quest for greener practices in construction & energy, positioning himself as a valuable asset to both academia and industry.
